CrossFit gym charging $15 drop-in fee for guest passes that used to be free — inflation or cash grab

My usual CrossFit box on the northwest side just started charging

5 for guest passes that have been free since I joined in 2019. They're calling it a "facility maintenance fee" but the equipment is the same beat-up rowers and rusty barbells we've had for years.

Hit up three other boxes this week and two of them are doing the same thing —

2-18 for what used to be a handshake deal. The third place still does free guest passes but their monthly membership jumped from
65 to
95.

Anyone else seeing this pattern around Chicago? Starting to feel like every fitness spot is finding new ways to squeeze members after the post-COVID membership surge died down.

I've been tracking this exact trend across the city since January. My home gym in Lincoln Park went from free guest passes to

Just hit a decent win on NBA props last week and trying to cash out $950 from an offshore book. They're asking for driver's license, bank statement from last 30 days, and a selfie holding my ID. Submitted everything Tuesday morning but still showing "under review" 4 days later.

Is this normal timing? The site says 24-48 hours for document verification but I'm past that window. This is my first withdrawal over $500 so maybe they're being extra careful, but getting nervous about the delay.

What's been everyone's actual experience with verification times? Trying to figure out if I should be worried or just wait it out.

0 per visit, then tried to sell me a "guest package" of 10 visits for
50. The kicker? They're positioning it as "premium access" when nothing about the facility changed except the price tags.

What really got me was last month when I brought my cousin from Milwaukee to check out the scene here. We hit four different spots over the weekend — two charged guest fees, one required a full membership consultation before letting us in, and only one honored the old free trial system. My cousin ended up signing with Everygame for their fitness betting markets instead of joining a Chicago gym because the whole experience felt like a hustle.

The math doesn't add up either. These places are busier than ever, class sizes are maxed out, and they're still nickel-and-diming people who might become full members. I switched to a 24/7 access spot that's honest about their pricing —

40 monthly, no hidden fees, guest passes are $8 flat rate. Sometimes the straightforward approach wins out over the fancy marketing.

It's a cash grab, plain and simple. These boxes know most people won't drive across town to save

5 on a guest pass, so they're banking on convenience fees. Same thing casinos do with ATM surcharges — captive audience, inflated prices.

Wait, guest passes used to be free? I'm new to the CrossFit scene here and every place I've checked wants

2-20 just to try a class. Is there anywhere in the city that still does free trials? I'm trying to find the right fit before committing to a
80+ monthly membership but these guest fees are adding up fast.

The timing makes sense from a business perspective. Most gyms saw a membership spike in early 2023, then a drop-off by summer when people realized they weren't using their memberships. Now they're trying to make up revenue through fees instead of retention.

I switched to Thunderpick for my fitness challenges and betting pools rather than dealing with gym politics. Their sports betting platform has better odds on marathon times than most of these gyms have reasonable pricing structures.

Supply and demand. If people keep paying the

5, the fee stays. If enough people walk away, they'll drop it back to free or find a middle ground at $5-8. The problem is most CrossFitters are pretty loyal to their home box, so they're not price shopping like they should be.

I've been tracking fitness industry pricing across Chicago for the past 18 months, and this guest fee trend started hitting the north side gyms in Q3 2023, then spread south by January. The data shows it's not random — these are coordinated market adjustments.

Looking at the numbers, the average CrossFit membership in Chicago jumped 23% since 2022, but retention rates dropped 11%. So instead of fixing the retention problem with better programming or equipment, they're adding revenue streams through guest fees, locker rentals, and "premium" class slots.

The math works out to roughly

80-220 additional revenue per existing member annually if they can convert just one guest visit per member into a fee. It's a low-risk play that doesn't require facility investment, just policy changes.

The Q3 2023 timing that @sports hawk jay mentioned lines up exactly with when my old box on Lincoln Ave started the

2 drop-in charge. Before that, guest passes were always comp if you knew a member. The shift happened right after Labor Day weekend — I remember because I brought my cousin from Milwaukee that Tuesday and got hit with the surprise fee.

What's interesting is the coordinated rollout pattern. My current gym near Wicker Park held out until February, but once they flipped to

5, three other boxes in a 2-mile radius followed within 6 weeks. The owners definitely talk to each other about pricing strategy.
